We are what we eat

We are what we eat.  Health is wealth.  Junk in, junk out.  Whatever the cliché, there is absolute truth in these words.  Nothing is more important in the prevention of disease then a healthy diet and lifestyle.

We live in a society where much of the food we eat is grown on factory farms using genetically engineered seeds, and copiously sprayed with chemicals.  After harvesting, much of this food is then stripped of its highly nutritional outer husk and shipped to a processing plant.  During processing additional fats and sugars are added to allow the food item to have taste.  On top of the herbicides already sprayed on our food as it grew, additional chemicals are also added to enhance texture and color.  Then even more chemicals are added to extend the shelf life of the product.  After processing this food is warehoused until it is shipped to supermarkets all over the country.  At some point in time a consumer will purchase this “food”, feed it to their family, and become less healthy than they were before they ate it.

Contrast this with a backyard gardener who has just a small plot of vegetables growing for their own enjoyment and consumption.  This person will walk out their back door, pick a few ripe red tomatoes, a cucumber, a red or green pepper, a few fresh basil leaves and immediately prepare it as a fresh salad in their kitchen.  The only processing is done with fresh water and a knife.  This person might add a pinch of salt and pepper plus a splash of healthy olive oil and vinegar. No genetic roulette, no chemicals, and zero nutritional loss.  This fortunate family is now a bit healthier because of this meal.

The same can be said of an organic food shopper buying the same items, with the only difference being that this shopper will suffer a bit of nutritional loss since their vegetables will have spent more time off of the vine before being consumed.

We are at a point in time where in many cases we do not even know where our food is coming from.  Walk down any supermarket aisle and notice just how many of the items on the shelves are processed foods.   Pick a box off of a shelf randomly and read the ingredients list.  How many words in this list do you recognize or guess are chemicals?

We are what we eat.  Health is wealth.  Junk in, junk out. . . . This is what our blog is all about.

Besides being food crusaders, we are also equally passionate about emotional health and travel.  Each person arrives at health in their own way.  For us, we find that a purposeful simple life is the easiest way to achieve what we desire.

We could say that if through our blog we are able to make a difference in just one person’s life, that we are happy and destiny has been fulfilled – but that wouldn’t be true.  Our goal is to impact as many readers as possible!  We can each affect small changes in the world.  Thus, the more people we influence and help, the more positive changes we are going to see on our planet.

Imagine the impact as we all begin to choose to purchase organic food items at the grocery store.  The herbicide sprayed, factory farmed vegetables will become less and less in demand, increased space will be needed for a larger variety of organic vegetables, and of this benefits local organic farmers, keeping more of our dollars in our local economies.

Here on our blog, you will find an ever increasing number of healthy, easy to make recipes.  We will have original educational and entertaining video features.  We will have regular features about how to easily incorporate healthy and healing herbs into your daily diet, for a life-long lasting effect.  We will also show you ways to prepare healthy foods that we discover as we travel the world.

Most of the items we make are filled with ingredients that are probably already in your pantry.  By becoming a regular reader of our blog, you’ll also discover some herbs and foods that you will want to add to your larder because they taste amazing, add some new pizzazz to your meals, and above all, they are super nutritious and can make you healthier!

Above all else we aim to make this an informative and helpful blog.  At the same time, since we are fun people we also hope to give you a few extra laughs each day.   We welcome your comments and love to hear from our faithful readers!
