Choose to Invest in Your Health!

We believe that the human body was designed as a near-perfect machine.  As a near-perfect machine the body was designed to take in all of its necessary nutrition that is naturally occurring in food sources and heal itself from many illnesses.  Since modern life has made us all so busy, many feel the need to resort to consuming convenient foods that are factory farmed, prepackaged and overly processed.  Unfortunately, much of the nutritional value has been destroyed by the very processing that made these foods convenient.

So, what are we left with?  Many of us are seemingly forced to resort to dietary supplements to make up for the lack of nutrients in our food.  Even worse, we end up with all sorts of illnesses and skyrocketing healthcare costs because our bodies are in an unhealthy state.

What if we turned our eating and personal health habits on their heads?  What if we appointed our highest priority to our personal health, instead of our personal wealth?  What if we decided to turn off the TV, or walk away from our computers and smart phones, so that we could devote time to our health each day?

The reality is that very few of us would suffer any adverse financial consequences from changing our priorities towards health.  We function much more efficiently when we are healthy.  Our stamina, concentration, imagination, efficiency and production all increase when our bodies are naturally balanced.  Days missed because of illness become a thing of the past.  Stress and worries about health issues evaporate.  We become much more confident and assured in everything we do.

The choice for health is a clear one, but still not one that is easy to make.  One of the hurdles to overcome is that not many people know where to start.  Becoming healthy seems to many to be almost an impossibility. With all of the advertising we are exposed to, it already seems as though we are making mostly smart decisions when it comes to food choices.  After all, we are already choosing packaged foods that are low in fat, low in sodium, and that are natural or organic.  If we didn’t buy prepackaged meals, we wouldn’t know how to make a meal from scratch.  Plus it would take too much time!  Well, if we don’t have enough time to be healthy, then we probably don’t have much time left to be unhealthy either.

The truth is that if we look honestly at what we are buying, in many cases these items are predominantly prepackaged processed foods.   A good rule of thumb is, if it comes in a box we don’t want to eat it.

Food shoppers should concentrate on only the perimeter aisles of grocery stores.  Purchase most of your goods from the produce section, and make those choices as organic nuts, fruits and vegetables.  In the dairy section, choose products that are organic and hormone free.  Eggs should be organic and contain high levels of omega 3 fatty acids.  Yogurt and kefir should contain live organisms.  Go to the meat and poultry aisle and choose organic grass fed beef, also high in omega 3’s.  Our chicken should also be organic and free-range whenever possible.  Breads should be multigrain.

We know.  The argument that is coming is that shopping for food in this manner is going to be expensive!

Here is what we have found after choosing to fund our “health account” instead of our bank account. We found that by really avoiding even going down any of the center aisles, that our food choices immediately and almost automatically became healthier.  We lost weight which exposed more of our muscle.  Our clothes fit better and were more flattering.  We no longer suffered from fatigue or any of the common illnesses that we acquired on a semi-regular basis.  We became much better cooks!   Now it is rare that we visit restaurants for meals, because we know that their food isn’t as good and can’t compare to what we prepare at home for ourselves.  To our surprise, we were soon spending less on food than ever before! But, even if we were spending a bit more, we still would have been thrilled because we felt so good.

We soon began to purchase less and less meat products, and more fruits and vegetables, lowering our food bills more.  To replace the protein that we were no longer getting from meats, we increased our consumption of beans and nuts.  One of our regular staples in the pantry now is a great assortment of dried beans, which purchased from the bulk section are one of the least expensive items in the entire store.

We no longer purchased the chips and snacks that are so very unhealthy for us.  Instead we roast our own raw nuts for snacks.  A simple 5 minutes of ingredient mixing, and 20 minutes in an oven, give you are very healthy and nutritious snack.

We began to love vegetable so much that we’ve become backyard organic farmers.  Now we grow many of the vegetables, fruits and berries that we consume daily.  We removed most all of the ornamental plants in the yard that didn’t produce food, and replaced them with delicious edibles.

To broaden our culinary horizon we purchased a few modern and healthy cookbooks.  These have become the precious holdings in our personal health stock market.  These few cookbooks have given us many delicious and healthy meals.  They have also stimulated our creativity, and it didn’t take long before we were modifying these recipes to make them our own.  Yes, we do now spend more time in the kitchen, but we love it!

Think of it this way:  be choosing to invest in your personal health now, you are likely to be saving tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars in future healthcare costs.  Besides just the financial rewards for being healthy, how about all of the upcoming quality years that you will have with less stress, more energy and a higher level of confidence?
